My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang, and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine by Kate Betts

I am an avid reader of travel journals. It not only fuels my love of travel, but is a great escape that is the next best thing to actually going somewhere! You would think by now that I would be tired of reading about adventures in Paris, but I am not.

This was a good memoir that I read by the pool over the weekend. It is the memoir of a fashion journalist from the 1980’s. I always find it interesting to read about experiences in moving to a foreign country. Although many of the challenges and rewards are similar they all happen in different ways. The unique part of this book was reading about Kate’s experiences in the 1980’s. There was much going on in Paris that people probably do not know about or have forgotten about including many terrorist bombings that made it a frightful place for many expatriates and tourists. Kate certainly thrived and her journey is interesting and amusing.

Each time I read about Paris it evokes the thrill I had taking my first ride down The Avenue des Champs-Élysées and seeing the Arc de Triomphe. It was absolutely magical. It seems Paris evokes a similar feeling in most people which is why it is the most written about city.
