Delray Beach is located on the East Coast of Florida right on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a small, but really fun beach town that definitely has a different vibe than over here on the West Coast of Florida. One of my friends from college is from Delray, so I decided to take a quick weekend trip over from Sarasota.
At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun. – Unknown
The drive from Sarasota to Delray is about three and a half hours. It’s a pretty easy drive. We took State Road 70 to State Road 710 To I-95. It was kind of an interesting drive because we don’t normally see this part of Florida. We did just a quick weekend, Friday to Sunday. While there is a lot to do in Delray and the surrounding area, I got a really good overview of the highlights of Delray. Now when I go back I’ll be able to explore more of the area.
Here are 7 things to do in Delray Beach:
The Green Market is Downtown Delray Beach’s farmers market. It is open seasonally October through May and has many all the usual things you would expect at a farmer’s market. They did have a lot of great food options as well as a section for local artists. Find more info here.
The Colony Hotel & Cabana Club is a famous historical hotel and landmark in Downtown Delray Beach. It was built in 1926 and features many of the original light fixtures, elevator and telephone switchboard. Even if you are not staying here, it is worth walking in and seeing the lobby. It is so open and colorful while also feeling old (in a good way!) and nostalgic. If you are interested in staying here, the location is perfect, right on Atlantic Avenue.
There are so many great places to eat! No matter what you are in the mood for, I’m sure you will find a restaurant in Delray. We happened to be in the mood for tacos and decided to check out Rocco’s Tacos. This is a chain, but the food and sangria was delicious. They also do table side guacamole. I liked eating here because you can order individual tacos, so if you don’t want a huge meal this is a great option.
The downtown area is definitely a great place to walk around and explore. I was really surprised by how many fun bars and restaurants were here. There is also plenty of shopping! One of the most unique places I saw was the Arts Garage. It is literally in a parking garage and they do concerts and art exhibits here. Check out more info about downtown Delray here.
Of course you cannot visit Delray Beach without going to the beach! I am very spoiled with the beautiful beaches here in Sarasota, so I wasn’t totally in love with the beach here (sorry…). But it is fun being on the Atlantic side and seeing actual waves. There are also fun shops and restaurants right next to the beach that are worth checking out. We had breakfast at Caffe Luna Rosa, which is a real hot spot. In all honesty, it was good but not worth the over an hour we had to wait. There are probably other spots to check out!
Once place we did go, which is located a couple doors down from Caffe Luna Rosa, is the Sandbar. This is probably the most “rowdy” place on Delray Beach. We stopped in for an afternoon refresher, and they had the DJ going and the place was packed. Of course, this was spring break time that we were here so I don’t know if it’s always like that. Either way, definitely a fun place to grab a drink!
My friend Ali and I are both big coffee drinkers, so we wanted to check out a local coffee place before we started our drive back home. We decided to go to Coffee District, which is a coffee shop by day and bar at night. They have good coffee and a really extensive selection of craft beers here as well.
These are just a few of the places to check out when in Delray Beach, Florida. We did most of this stuff all in one day, which was a lot but it was definitely fun walking around and exploring a new part of Florida.
