Weekend Getaway: Universal Studios Orlando
Post by Ashley
I have a confession to make. Every once in a while I make my down I4, past Disney World, to Universal Studios Orlando. I never had any desire to go to Universal Studios until they opened The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Even the first couple times I went to the park I only went to the Harry Potter section. Finally I went and spent the day at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. I had such a great time and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Never mind how amazingly, awesomely, fantastic The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (separate post on this to come later) is and how that revitalized Universal Studios Orlando, the rest of the two parks and City Walk are really worth seeing as well. Universal definitely has the thrill rides. They actually have some really interesting and innovative rides that use technology for a very thrilling experience. I also enjoy walking around both parks as they each have their own interesting theming. Universal Studios has different city-themed areas (New York and San Francisco) while Island of Adventure has different themed islands like Dr. Suess, Marvel, and the Lost Continent.
Traveling Gals Tip: If you are coming from out of town, it is worth staying on-property. You will get free Express Passes which will help you get more out of your trip, especially during the busy seasons. There are currently 4 on-property hotels, with a new one on the way for 2016.
Universal Studios is a place for all ages. It is hard to not feel nostalgic walking through and seeing things from movies we are all familiar with.
[Updated] Newest ride update from Universal: Fast and Furious! Also keep your eye out for Reign of Kong: Skull Island and the revamp of The Incredible Hulk Coaster set to open this summer. Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon is set to open in 2017. Universal also quietly bought a large plot of land in Orlando, so I am expecting they should be making a big announcement in the near future. I am crossing my fingers and toes for a third Harry Potter area!
There are also special events throughout the year: Halloween Horror Nights, Grinchmas, Mardi Gras, concert series, and more!
Favorite Rides: Minion Mayhem, Transformers, Revenge of the Mummy, and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringott’s (at Universal Studios). The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman, Jurassic Park River Adventure, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (at Islands of Adventure).
When you are there, be sure to try the Brookie. It is a cookie baked into a brownie and it is so delicious.
Let me know what your favorite rides are at Universal and what you think of the parks in the comments!
