Attention all foodies! Savor Sarasota is coming up from June 1-14. Here is an interesting fact for those new to Sarasota and those who live here…Sarasota has the highest concentration of Zagat® rated restaurants in Florida.  It makes sense because even just spending a weekend here provides you with so many quality, food options. 79 restaurants are set to participate this year in the 12th annual Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week.   This 2 week extravaganza is hosted by Visit Sarasota County (VSC), and provides everyone an opportunity to try new restaurants and revisit favorites by enjoying pre-fixe three-course dinner menus and multi course lunch menus.  This…

10 Things to do in Accra 1.       Flagstaff House: Completed in 2009, the Flagstaff House is known as the Presidential Palace. The architecture is based on the Asante Golden Stool. 2.       Jamestown Lighthouse: Jamestown is one of Accra’s oldest districts. The lighthouse was built in the 1930s and offers a nice view of the harbor and city (depending on the level of pollution that day.) Be prepared the navigate up a tiny ladder. 3.       Labadi Beach: Labadi Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the coast and is often crowded on the weekends. It is located east of…

A Day at the Circus Last weekend, The Traveling Gals were lucky enough to be invited to spend the morning training at the Circus!  Sarasota and the Circus have a long history together.  Sarasota was the winter headquarters for John Ringling and is known as the “Circus Capital of the World”.  The international circus community continues to be an integral part of the city’s atmosphere. This was our first time at the Circus Arts Conservatory and shame on us because it is blocks away from our home.  The slogan More Than a Circus is extremely accurate.   The building is shaped…

Ghana in Pictures Ghana is in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea and bordered by the Ivory Coast, Togo, and Burkina Faso. As it was a former British colony, the main language spoken is English and the people are very friendly. This makes Ghana a great spot for a first time visit to Africa. In fact, many travel guides refer to Ghana as “Africa for beginners.” Accra is the capital city where there is the most to see. Ashley had the opportunity to spend two weeks in Ghana traveling from the south to the northern part of the country….

Caribbean Cruise Aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas We just got off a seven day Caribbean cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas. Of course we had a fabulous time, even though the weather wasn’t that great. It’s hard to have a bad time on a cruise! This one left out of Tampa and stopped in Roatan, Honduras, Belize City, Belize, Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. Although the Rhapsody is one of Royal Caribbean’s smaller ships, there is still plenty to do. This was also one of the best crews we have ever experienced on a cruise. They were…

The Year of the Rooster The Chinese animal zodiac is shengxiao in Chinese and means “born resembling”.  It is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its corresponding attributes. There are many stories about how these animals came to fruition, but common belief is the animals simply represented dates on the calendar.  It is said the Jade Emperor created a race of animals and the first twelve to win the race would be chosen.  Prior to the race, the cat and rat were best friends.  The rat promised to awaken the cat…

Port of Call: Nassau, The Bahamas A popular stop on a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise is Nassau. Nassau is famous for Paradise Island which is home to the Atlantis Resort. Paradise Island is a three mile stretch of land that protects Nassau’s harbor. Nassau is the capital city of The Bahamas, and there are lots of really fun and interesting things to do here even if you are only here for the day. Nassau was contested by the English, French, and Spanish, so there are lots of different cultural influences around the area. There are several museums that showcase the…

It’s very disappointing when you go on the vacation you planned and saved for and it rains the whole time. We have experienced this before and it’s super frustrating. Most recently it rained the entire time Ashley was in Georgia for New Year’s weekend. Not a great way to start 2017. You might feel like you are stuck in the hotel room all day, but it doesn’t have to be like that! While the rain might alter your plans, you can still have a great time and explore the city you are visiting. Grab your ponchos and have fun. (more…)
